Bach Flower Essences For Pets: Spotlight On Mimulus

First, it feels really good to get back doing these posts again, I’ve not written a Bach Flower Post in a while. Many people wrote to tell me how much they enjoyed these posts and found them to be extremely useful. They also kept asking when I would write another so here it is.

When I first started to use the Bach Flower essences, I was instantly drawn to them. Something about their simplicity in power and the fact that it is vibrational healing, really spoke to me. Then, I became a Bach Flower Therapist and I have been using the Bach Flowers with my animal clients as well as teaching workshops about the essences for the last 8 years and I love them!

Other “Spotlight” Bach Flower posts… So far, we’ve put the Spotlights on Heather, Larch, Honeysuckle, and Rescue Remedy. In each I talked about how these essences help to bring about re-alignment, emotional re-balancing, and Well-Being to your animal friend(s).

My Free e-Book: “25 Bach Flowers for a Happier & Healthier Pet”… In my free e-book, I describe 25 of the 38 essences that I use regularly. As well as sharing some of my secret combinations that I’ve been using for years, that I’ve found extremely helpful in my work with animals. It is easy enough to download, simply click on the link ”Bach Flower Book Download” and follow the instructions. You will need to join my mailing list, which NOT ONLY gives you the book as a present but also a FREE 15 minute Phone Session For Your Pet as well! Just fill out the form, and your will then receive an email with a link and instructions on how to download the book and join my email list.

SO…What ARE Bach Flowers?…They are a series of 38 essences made up from a variety of plants and trees. Dr. Edward Bach started working with them in 1931. He discovered that each of the 38 Essences from well-known and common trees, flowers and even pure water from springs. Could alleviate and help to lift the negative blockages which he believed shows themselves in negative emotions, and behavior which come about from one living one’s daily life.

Originally the Bach Flowers were for human consumptions. But later on it was discovered the animals through their lives with us, can also begin to display the negative behavior patterns that are found in us humans, Jealously, aggression, fear and so on.

I have personally found that since an animal’s natural state is to be in a constant state of allowing and Well-Being and that they gravitate naturally towards nature and her healing power that results in animals are incredibly fast and can be very dramatic.

Essentially the way they work are at a beings vibrational and emotions levels. The essences are vibrating at a higher speed and more POSITIVE level, then that of the current negative behavior. When taken, the essence opens up the blockage(s) and similar to a turning fork that is struck and put in a glass of water, re-tunes the body to the more positive vibrational level. This is bringing BACK an animal’s natural feeling of Well-Being and thus positive emotions and behaviors with it.

Sounds great! Where Do I Get Them?… At the bottom of this post is a link to a website where I buy my essences from.

Please remember! Bach Flowers are wonderful tools. However they are NOT a substitute for veterinary care. ALWAYS consult your Veterinarian on any cases dealing with your pet’s health even if you just suspect there might be a problem!

So, let’s continue looking at the Bach Flowers Essences by putting the spotlight on Mimulus…

Mimulus is the remedy that Dr. Edward Bach called “Bravery Flower.” He discovered that this particular flower deals with the soul’s ability for courage and trust. Which means when a being is out of alignment and in need of Mimulus they are very fearful, untrusting and unsure.

The Rock Rose essence, the “Panic” essence, is sometimes confused with the traits of Mimulus. This is where they differ:

Mimulus is for fear stemming from SPECIFIC things or situations.

ex: Fear of thunderstorms, fear of men, fear of loud noises, fear of being in the car or getting in or riding in their trailer, fear of plastic bags, fear of vacuum cleaners (although I don’t like them either!)

Rock Rose is for when the animal is panicking to the point of almost losing their mind with fear.

Positive outcome for your Pets:… Animals become more confident and courageous, can enjoy life without fear. I often give this Bach Flower for a short-term to medium-term amount time. A medium amount of time is generally a few months anywhere from 2-6. This is because once your animal has gotten over their fear they have a tendency not be AS afraid of that thing anymore. They are able to move on mentally in a happy and healthy manner. An example of a short (or acute situation) would be: shortly before a guest visits the house and you suspect your animal(s) are going to be somewhat fearful. The more (Chronic) MEDIUM-term situation is such as: a pet that is CONSTANTLY fearful of that thing every time it occurs for example thunderstorms or being alone, or loud noises. Then the essence should be given until you see that the animal is handling the situation in a much more healthier state.

Below are some examples, which might help you to decide if Mimulus is right for your animal friend(s).

What are some common Mimulus uses?

  • When your animal friend, seems shy, or timid and careful around people.
  • When you’re your animal friends shows signs of fear in a specific situation, ex: doing shows or events.
  • If they seem to suffer from specific phobia’s (fear of crowds, of being with other animals, being in a new situation, having to go to the vet (yes I know no animal likes going to the Vet but the essence can help them remain calmer in the office), entering a enclosed space, going to a new home.
  • Your animal friend seems to be slow at doing new things and always needing to start something carefully and slowly.
  • Horses who seem jittery and skittish.
  • An animal always fearful of such things as thunderstorms, loud noises, children being around them, being around other animals, lightning,
  • If your animal friend makes noises ex: crying, or whimpering

HOWEVER and I STRESS this: These could be a signs of an even bigger physical problem! Consulting your veterinarian immediately is advised!

These are more examples, but these are only to name a few.

Tip: Consulting your Animal Communicator to verify that these are the problems is also a very good idea!

How do I give Bach Flowers to my animal friend(s)?

Normally putting the drops in the animals water works very well, and if you have a multiple animal household, don’t worry, the Bach Flowers will not do anything to the other animals, unless they need it.

For small animals (cats, dogs): Give 2-3 drops in their water, from each bottle and then put new drops in whenever you change the water.

For bigger animals (Horses, Cows, Llamas, etc)anywhere from 8-12 drops on a slice of bread, or muffins have been know to work too! Or take an apple, cut it either in halves or quarters, then use a knife of stick to make small holes into each slice and then put the essences into each of the holes. That should do the trick!

If you do not notice even the SLIGHTEST of changes after a 24-72 hour period then it might mean your friend will need to try another Bach Flower.

Where do I find the Bach Flower essences?… As I promised…
Here is the information where you can find the “Original Bach Flower” Remedies for the lowest prices that I have found so far, the website is called Imedmart.com

I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to learn about Bach’s Flower Essences (thank you, Coryelle!!). My beagle is prone to seizures which are not the grande mal seizures that we’re all familiar with. She has “choking” seizures – she sits hunched over, eyes glazed and makes this horrendous choking sound. It took some research and a vet consultation to find out what was going on. She doesn’t get them often enough to require daily meds, tho, thank goodness. The other night she began having a seizure and I sat beside her quietly as I usually do, waiting for the episode to pass. But this was a tough seizure. She’d just seem like it was over and she’d go immediately into another one! I was thinking that I’d have to take her to the emergency vet when I remembered the Rescue Remedy. Because Jelly is a beagle and has lovely, long ears, I put 4 drops on the inside of each ear flap and massaged gently. Within SECONDS she took a deep breath, her eyes refocused, she looked around and then started licking her paws and snuffling around the sofa for crumbs as tho nothing had happened! It was AMAZING! Last night she started to have another seizure so I immediately applied the Rescue Remedy to both ears. Even my daughter was speechless when, after a few seconds, Jelly took a deep breath, sighed, and then stood up and trotted away as tho nothing had happened!
Rescue Remedy – don’t leave home without it!!!!!

    Hell Karleen,
I’m so glad that you’re sharing this us! What happened to your beagle Jelly and how you handled this really challenging situation was fantastic BRAVO! You used Rescue Remedy (RR) exactly how it should be used, for an emergency situation. When a body (animal or people’s) are going through any major trauma (like a seizure) RR is an excellent supportive essence to give. Giving it to her by rubbing it on her ear was the BEST way to give it to her safely as well.
As you know if Jelly did not need the RR her reaction would not have changed at all, and the speed in which it did really shows how incredibly fast these essences can be to help your animal in a similar scenario.
It is important to note thatRR is supportive and should be used in tandem with taking your animal to your Vet.
RR can be used in so many different situations that it is impossible to list them all, so thank you for letting us know about yours. All the best to and Jelly and thanks for taking the time to comment.
That is why I made this post so people can read what happens

My female dog, Lynx, is fearful of strangers. Especially men. She also is afraid of anything new that you might hold in your hand. Examples:brooms, shovels, or anything that can make a sound. Soon we have to have a dog sitter stay with her and our two other animals for two weeks. I started giving Lynx 4 drops, 4x a day for the past three weeks. She seems a little calmer, will play more with our other dog and stays with us more instead of staying in my computer room or on her mat. In other words, she is becoming more sociable.
We also have had the dog sitter come visit us a few times so she will become more familiar with him. (We tried but cannot get a female sitter). At his second visit, she responded very well to him.
I am having him visit a few more times before we leave and I will continue the drops of Mimulus but reducing it to 3x then 2x a day.
Judging from your time advise, I will have to see if she will need them when we are away.
Would you suggest something different or stay on this path?

  4. Coryelle says:

    Hi Angela,
First let me say…what great news about your dog Lynx! Might I suggest one thing regarding working with the Bach Flowers? Since they was essentially vibrational healing energy, try to bring the vibration (aka the result) that you want to achieve more into the present situation. What I personally do is after I have started to give the essences I begin talking in the PAST tense ex: My cat Sam WAS afraid of strangers, and he HAD a fear loud noises….etc. This helps the essences to also do their work more effectively.
It’s good that you have a male sitter, she is obviously feeling more and more like she can handle the “scary things”. All are really great signs showing how well she is doing!
I wrote a post about 3 things you can do when you are traveling with or without your pet
Also, there are other essences that help with making adjustments to new situations, as well as boosting her self confidence letting her know that she can indeed handle anything that comes her way. These might help support her before you go and then also in the first few days of you and your family being gone. Those could be Walnut and Larch I wrote this post on Larch that might help you too..
Thanks for leaving this comment and telling us about your amazing dog, and helping to spread the word about how powerful the Flower Essences can be.

This is s great info Coryelle. For the first time I’ve read something like this. I still wonder about such things. I think if it works, would be the best natural remedy for those who suffer. Great to see this article.

    Hi JDT,
I love flower essences! Since working with the essences I’ve lost count at how many clients have told me how amazing they worked for their pets.
And yes, being fearful is so far from where we are supposed to be the animals especially know this, that’s why being fearful feels so awful. It feels so good to hear when a client lets me know that their animal is no longer living in fear. Thanks for your comment
